Read below:
SG: It has been a couple of years since your last single ‘Tonight’. How does it feel to be back?
Styl-Plus:
Shifi: It has actually been about 6/7 years and it feels so good. Quite interesting. Like a new journey altogether. We are enjoying the promotional tours.
Zeal: Nice feeling. A very exciting process. Lots of positive vibes. the atmosphere is just amazing.
SG: What have you guys been up to since your supposed break from the music industry?
Styl-Plus:
Shifi: We never took a break. We just didn’t release singles/albums but we have been performing and gone on a lot of tours, locally and internationally. For transitional purposes, we didn’t release music but it helped us dabble into other ventures.
Zeal: I second that. We went into other business ventures.
SG: How does it feel to be a two-man team now?
Styl-Plus:
Zeal: There are a lot of differences now in terms of logistics and entertainment. We are trying to adjust.
Shifi: ..And it’s much more convenient now..when tours are planned, it’s a lot cheaper.
SG: Has Tunde’s Departure Affected Styl-Plus In Anyway?
Styl-Plus:
Shifi /Zeal: [Unanimously] Nah..
Shifi: Just another transitional phase..
SG: What was the inspiration behind your new song, ‘Aso Ibora’ ?
Styl-Plus:
Shifi: A friend, Fatai Bakare..He wrote the chorus about 10 years ago. We asked him if we could use it and he said why not, so we worked around the verses.
Zeal: Credit goes to Fatai Bakare. We also thought it well to bring out this season since it’s a season of love. [Shifi chirps in] It was almost a perfect blend of his writing with our vocal ability.
SG: You tend to do love songs a lot, why?
Styl-Plus:
Shifi: We grew up listening to that kind of music plus it’s the way we learned how to sing and our vocal techniques come out best with songs like that. ‘Love’ songs bring out the best in our vocal ability.
Zeal: It was also best to start with a love song as a first single after a long time. Felt like the right step.
SG: Are you guys married or in a relationship?
Styl-Plus:
Zeal: [Laughs aloud] Speaking for both of us, we get girlfriend oh!
SG: What’s your take on the music industry with all the new acts that have emerged?
Styl-Plus:
Shifi: Music is always going to evolve but I must say, the quality of production has really improved. Not to take it away, from the new acts. Some of them are doing incredibly well with the quality of production and vocal dexterity.
Zeal: Kudos to the Nigerian music industry. It’s really a tricky market with no base or structure.
SG: Should we be expecting any collaborations soon?
Styl-Plus:
Zeal: We are about a whole lot right now. This is the new era. You have to keep up with pace and trend . There would be a video for ‘Aso Ibora’ remixes and collaborations..won’t mention names yet.
SG: What motivated you to start music?
Styl-Plus:
Shifi: Tricky question. Well, just because we liked the sound of our voices together and people around us enjoyed it too. We thought maybe we could make a career out of it.
Zeal: It was passion-all about passion..with time, it became a business-minded venture.
SG: Any album or singles apart from ‘Aso Ibora’ on the way?
Styl-Plus:
Shifi: Yes. After the video/remix of ‘Aso Ibora’ comes out, we plan to release another single before Easter.
SG: Any word for your expectant fans?
Styl-Plus:
Shifi: I appreciate the fact that people accepted us after a very long time. The response has been warm. We can assure you that we won’t be taking any more long breaks.
Zeal: If they could see our hearts, they’d see a very huge appreciation-for being patient and being there. Like my brother said, no more long breaks. Back to back.
